Kettering University Online Supports FIRST Robotics Championship in Detroit

In addition to writing and producing training videos for volunteers, staff from Kettering University Online had a strong presence at the FIRST Robotics Championship last month, at the Cobo Center in Detroit, as Kettering University sponsored the Student Lounge and booths at the Innovation Faire and Scholarship Row. The Kettering Global Team all spent volunteer hours supporting the event. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology, designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate students to pursue education and career opportunities in STEM while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.

The FIRST Championship brought tens of thousands of kindergarten, through high school, students to Detroit to compete in tech and robotics challenges. Educators, industry professionals, corporate sponsors, family and friends, organizations, and the colleges and universities who support FIRST participants also attended. In addition to the contests, a conference was held that included sessions on technical resources, mentor/coach/volunteer resources, how to implement FIRST programs in school settings, diversity and inclusion, and innovation and entrepreneurship. Participants and Kettering University Online staff enjoyed musical acts, art boards, giant Jenga, and photo booths.

Kettering and FIRST Robotics

Since 1999, Kettering University has been active in FIRST Robotics. The University houses the FIRST Robotics Community Center which is the site for nine local FIRST Robotics teams. Kettering also provides the site for back-to-back district competitions, awards scholarships, and offers pre-college summer programs. It is interesting to note that Michigan has more FIRST teams than any other state in the country and Kettering has become a central hub in supporting that growth in addition to being a major sponsor of FIRST.

Bob Nichols, Director of Kettering’s FIRST Robotics Community Center says “FIRST Robotics combines the excitement of sports with the rigors of science and technology. A FIRST Robotics competition is a STEM rock concert with all the music and dancing between competitions. You have to see it for yourself” (Kettering, 2019, para. 4).
