Meet Kristy Finnigan, Kettering University Online Lean Manufacturing Master's Degree Student

Why did you pursue a degree at Kettering University Online?

There were two essential criteria that needed to be met while I was investigating my graduate school and Kettering met both of them:

  1. The program needed to be flexible so that I could do my school work when it suited me. Our manufacturing plant runs a multi-shift operation and I couldn’t be tied to structured class times.
  2. The program needed to be innovative and provide me with an education that I could apply while I was learning.

The MSLM offered at Kettering is structured to suit the students. There are regular weekly assignments that ensure the students stay on course, but because there are no scheduled classes, the learning happens on my schedule.

What excites you most about this degree program?

The MSLM is an innovative program that teaches students to streamline processes and eliminate waste in corporations. It can be applied to any field in any industry. In every module of every course that I’ve taken so far, I’ve been able to find at least one thing I could immediately apply in my regular job. This has made me more efficient and more effective in my work.

What do you want to accomplish with your degree?

I hope to advance my career. I spent a lot of time researching programs that would help me stand apart from the mainstream. I believe I found that in the MSLM.

In what ways has the program enhanced your professional experience, approach or opportunities?

Thus far, the program has made me more efficient in my work and more effective in my projects. As a Quality Engineer I spend a lot of time trying to solve problems and prevent them from ever occurring again. The knowledge I’ve gained from the program has altered my perspective of our manufacturing process and made it easier for me to find potential sources of variation.

What is your secret for success?

Be kind, be fair, and always follow through with your promises.  People may not remember much about you, but they always remember your integrity and how you made them feel.

What advice do you have for people considering this degree program?

This is a well-rounded degree that can be applied to any field and any environment. I applied to this degree because it would make me better at my job and help me stand out. I’ve only completed about one-third of the program and every course I’ve taken has helped me perform my job better and I do stand out amongst my peers. The program does require a significant time commitment though, so make sure your family and friends understand the journey you are embarking on otherwise there will be stress in your relationships.  Be sure to manage your time so you can avoid becoming isolated.

Women hold less than 25% of STEM jobs. What advice do you have for females wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Go for it! As I mentioned earlier, and for any graduate program you do undertake, make sure your family and friends understand the time and effort requirements before you begin. Manage your time and be sure to schedule time for yourself and for the people important to you.
