Kettering University was rated among the best schools in the nation at helping students secure internships, according to a survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education.
Kettering topped the career-preparation category of the survey, the newspaper reported. Kettering’s President Robert McMahan said that opportunities to apply academic concepts in the real world are a “critical component” of a student’s education.
“If we taught musicians the way we teach engineers, the would all get 12 years of music theory before ever touching an instrument,” he said. “The application of knowledge cannot be an afterthought.”
Although this survey focused on internships, its results align with a prior survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education. In that survey, students were asked to rate how well their university was preparing them for a career on a scale from zero to 10 with 10 being the best. Kettering scored a 9.63 in that survey, the highest rating in the country.
